Edible Bouquet by Elaine Savoie of Hornby Island

If you’re a regular visitor you know this site is concerned almost entirely with food and drink, which is why we think you should hear about a unique, (almost) all Canadian concert, The Sex Lives of Vegetablesand other Delicious Distractions, April 20th, 7.30 p.m. at VanDusen Botanical Garden.

Full disclosure: we’re romantically connected (as in married) to Heather Pawsey, the creative force who’s behind Astrolabe Musik Theatre, producer of this concert (AKA Partner in Calories…).

We’re equally huge admirers of poet Lorna Crozier (this week named co-recipient of the 10th annual Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Literary Excellence), who’ll read her poems before their musical performance.

Here’s an excerpt from a previous performance!

veg-sm-1Lorna Crozier wrote these 17 short poems back in the 80s. Over the last few years our close friend and renowned Canadian composer Leslie Uyeda has set 15 of them to music in wonderfully contrasting forms. Lorna’s poems are witty and intelligent, naughty and sometimes provocative, and superbly titillating in a very tasteful but candid way.  Leslie’s contrasting compositions play perceptively on each poem’s personality and take them to another dimension entirely.

Blend in an incredibly talented ensemble of AK Coope (clarinet), Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa (piano) and Heather Pawsey (soprano) and you have the ingredients for a truly fun, and yes, just a little bit (garden) dirty evening!

So there you have it. If you’ve ever wondered what carrots, artichokes and the like are really doing when you’re not looking, here’s your chance to find out.

It all goes down at the dramatic new VanDusen Visitor Centre

We’ll see you there!
