A regular refrain often heard in Vancouver concerns its lack of ‘authentic’ Mexican dining.

Right off the top, we’ll be the first to say we don’t claim to be an expert in things Mexican or culinary Mexican in particular. However, we’ve been intrigued by a tiny and tasty haunt on Davie Street in the city’s West End.

Calli (1102 Davie St., 604-633-9950) is a labour of love run by Tomas Reyes and his mom, Lulu Valdes. It’s far from fancy but the food is well prepared and truly reasonable…

Tomas is the genial and knowledgeable host while Lulu runs the kitchen.

Reyes has a background in management consulting—suggesting a skill set that more than a few restaurants we know 10 times the size of this place could well use! He pays close attention to sourcing the most authentic and appropriate ingredients wherever possible—but not at all costs. He’s also very active online and readily responds to both kudos and criticism, another good model to follow…

We suspect this may be just the beginning for this tasty little spot.
